What we decline

Work we do not take on at the bench

We decline any work on plated or gold-filled costume jewellery, as the base metal will not survive a second firing.

We do not accept commissions to copy another maker's signed design, however close the client's attachment to the original.

Because our insurance covers finished pieces only, we cannot take in loose stones for independent certification or valuation.

Where a setting is already fractured through the claw, we decline to reset the stone until the mount itself is rebuilt.

At the bench

Bespoke restoration work carried out by hand

Rebuilding worn claws and settings

We raise new metal on tired claws and re-cut the seats so the stone sits true again. Old solder is removed and the mount is annealed before any work begins.

Sizing rings up and down

We cut and rejoin the shank, matching the original alloy and finish so the join is invisible. A half to two sizes is routine; wider changes may need a new shank.

Remodelling inherited pieces

Stones from an old brooch or ring are lifted, cleaned and reset into a design drawn with you. The original metal is reused wherever it remains sound.

Re-tipping and re-pointing stones

Where a grain or claw has worn flat, we add matching metal and shape it to the original profile. The surrounding setting is checked at the same time.

Replacing missing or broken links

We draw or source link stock to match the gauge and colour of the existing chain. Each new link is soldered, tested and dressed to the same pattern.

Restoring clasps, hinges and catches

We repair or remake box clasps, tongue fittings and hinge pins so the piece closes with the tension it held when new. Springs and safety catches are replaced as needed.

How a commission runs

The order in which we take on a repair

Step 1

Request an appointment or send a photograph

Write to us through the enquiries page with a clear image of the piece and a note of what has failed. We reply within two working days with an initial view and a time to call.

Step 2

Bring the piece to the atelier for assessment

We examine the mount under magnification, weigh the metal and test the stones in front of you. You leave with a written scope of work and a fixed price, not an estimate.

Step 3

Approve the scope and pay the deposit

No work starts until you sign off the written scope and settle the deposit shown on it. We hold the piece in the safe until the bench diary has room for it.

Step 4

Collect the finished piece and a written record

We hand back the restored item with photographs of the work and a note of the metal added. Any balance is settled at collection, by card or bank transfer.

We restore and remodel fine jewellery by hand at our London bench.
